Everything on the face earns its place: the time, the day’s three goals, and the few things worth knowing at a glance.

1. The time, first

   The largest thing on the screen, sized to your screen. Everything else stays out of its way.

2. Three goals, three bars

   Steps, intensity minutes and floors, or in HeroFace Pro whichever three you pick. Bar length carries the glance; the numbers are the detail.

3. The day at the edge

   The ring around the edge of the screen shows the whole day at once, filling as your goals progress. The move bar stays out of it.

4. A streak worth keeping

   Days in a row you met your step goal, in gold. It shows up when you have one, and stays out of the way when you don’t.

Your three, your colour.

Pick the accent colour, blue, cyan or magenta, on the watch itself (Customize) or in the Garmin Connect app. HeroFace Pro also lets you set each bar to steps, calories, intensity minutes, distance, floors or the move bar, and turn seconds and the temperature on or off, from the Garmin Connect app on your phone.

Always on

A dim, drifting clock that respects your watch’s always-on rules.

Round or rectangular

From a 208-pixel Forerunner 55 to a 466-pixel fēnix, one layout that measures itself. On a rectangular watch the ring becomes a frame along the edges; on a black-and-white Instinct, a gauge in the small round window.

If you also own HeroSet, the bars can show today’s push-ups, sit-ups and squats, the ring becomes your progress to the next rank, and holding the face opens the app. On the 73 watches that support it, and entirely on the watch. Without HeroSet, nothing is missing.

Round and rectangular screens, AMOLED and memory-in-pixel, Connect IQ 3.0 and newer, and the black-and-white Instinct. Tested on a Forerunner 965 and at every screen size in Garmin’s simulator. The Connect IQ Store shows whether your exact model is listed. HeroFace runs on all of them; HeroFace Pro is sold only on Garmin’s paid-app list, which leaves out many older watches, among them the Instinct 2, 2S and 2X, the Descent G1 and the first-generation Venu Sq.
