Help for Light Hours, a Garmin widget that shows whether the light is on by the rule you pick.

Contact

Questions or bugs: email hello@verden.watch. Please include your watch model and its software version, where you were (the country is enough), the rule you had picked, and what Light Hours showed at the time.

How to read it

The screen shows IN or OUT: where now sits against the rule you picked. Under it, in large digits, is the time left until the next edge: until the light ends while IN, until it starts while OUT. Under that is the window the countdown points into, start and end. Times are whole minutes, never outside the window.

On watches with a glance list, the glance in the glance list shows IN or OUT and the edge time, like “Until 17:38”. On a watch with no glance list, the app opens straight to the main screen.

Light Hours does not know the rules where you are. It counts by the rule you pick, so check any local rules yourself.

The settings

There are two, both in the app’s menu. Open the app, then open its menu (hold UP, the menu key).

Rule

You choose where the light starts and ends:

  • Civil twilight: The sun 6° below the horizon, at both ends. The default.
  • 0 min: Sunrise to sunset.
  • 15, 30, 45 or 60 min: That long before sunrise and after sunset (“pre-rise, post-set”).

Accent

On colour screens the countdown takes an accent colour: Sky, Mint, Amber, Pink or Violet (Amber is the default; a screen with only eight colours shows Pink and Violet alike, so its list leaves Violet out). It only colours the countdown, or the sentence in its place; it never changes what IN or OUT means. Black-and-white screens have no colour setting, so their menu shows the Rule list directly.

Common questions

How do I refresh the place?

Light Hours uses your watch’s location to work out sunrise, sunset and twilight. Press START to ask the watch for a new position; a tap on the screen does not. Whether the watch can give one right now is up to the watch, so outdoors or at a window is the best try.

It says “Old place”.

The place Light Hours holds is older than a week. Press START to ask the watch for a new position.

It says “No place yet”.

Light Hours has no place to count from. Press START to ask the watch for one. In the glance, “Open once” means the app has not been opened yet: open it once.

It says “No end today”.

The light does not end today by your rule, so there is no end to count down to. This happens far north or south.

It says “No start today” or “No start tomorrow”.

There is no start to count down to: today has no window (“No start today”), or today’s window has ended and tomorrow has none (“No start tomorrow”). This happens far north or south, when the line your rule reads is not crossed that day.

Does it know the rules where I am?

No. It counts by the rule you pick. Check any local rules yourself.

What does it store?

Your place rounded to a tenth of a degree with the time it was read, whether you have opened the app, and your Rule and Accent. All of it stays on the watch. See the privacy policy.
